changing course

It seems like House of Consignment premiered at such a convenient time - when I was stuck in a financial rut about how to pursue this consignment dream.  So changing course and partaking this dream in a different direction.

We will put the brick and mortar idea in the back burner and choose the more obvious option of an online presence via eBay, in sync with a website.  We have agreed on the name LeLux, simple and chic.  I have decided on starting with our own closets of stuff and slowly branching out.

Currently in the midst of studying for finals - April to May . . . then studying for the bar - June to July.  I'm sure it will go by pretty quickly and I can finally jump off the slow moving law student train and hop on board the exciting fashion entrepreneur flight.

Love,

Roadblocks of the start up

The first major roadblock were petty arguments among the cofounders (my sisters) because there were too many chefs in the kitchen.  That was resolved . . . for now at least.  The next hurdle was finding a location.  We found a location and so negotiating the lease shouldn't be a big deal since my mom's flower shop has been a faithful tenant one door over for the last 25+ years.  The ultimate hurdle we are now currently facing, is financing.  We thought it would be easy if we each put in a couple grand, but calculating all the costs of rent and renovations has been a reality slap across the face.  Based on my research, bank loans for start-ups are extremely hard to come by.  The best option is to borrow . . . from who would be the question.  One sister is a stay at home mom, another sister works part time, and another sister is a student.  My money maker won't start until October.  It'll be all too easy to quit or even to postpone until the end of the year, but I want this business up and running before I start work.  I want to be fully committed to my job and not have this start up lingering in the back of my mind.  Time is what I have now (except from May to July for final exams and the bar), but money is what I don't have.  Later, I will have the money but absolutely no time.  So what do I do?  Go find the money one way or the other because you can't buy time.  This seems to be the part where most people with great start-up ideas quit, but not me.
After all, it's just spilt coffee.

Being a Tall Poppy

via Forbeswoman
"I believe passionately that to lead the lives we are capable of—rich in contribution, daring and purpose—we must first be willing to stand out from the crowd.  After all, how can we expect to have outstanding success if we aren’t first willing to stand out?  And never has there been a more important time for us to be willing to step out, stand out and challenge “status-quo” thinking—to risk being a Tall Poppy. . .
Margaret Thatcher once said, “You cannot lead from the crowd.”  She would know.  We cannot lead others by walking the path of safety.  Nor can we lead ourselves the same way.
In every adversity lies opportunity.  But it takes boldness, audacity and courage to extract it.  In our personal lives, and the challenges we face in our relationships, finance, family and faith. . . More than playing safe, they demand our taking risks.
Now is a time for audacity, not austerity.  Are you willing to risk it?  More so, can you afford not to?
Live Boldly, Lead Bravely!"

Last night I was thinking about what I would do this semester to make money.  I have always had some sort of part time gig and more throughout the school year.  But not this semester.  Full time student only = no extra cash.  Upon thinking of different options I went back to thinking about how much money I can make selling my designer duds.  Vintage stores and consignment stores are not an option just because I feel they rip you off.  Online is just too hard with eBay, Etsy, etc. . . So I was thinking what about an actual brick and mortar storefront?  There's tons of people I know who would love to sell their vintage/used designers, but just don't know how and where they can get the most bang for their buck.  So last night this idea brewed for hours in my head until 3am!  I just couldn't force myself to sleep!  I shared it with the 3 sisters today and they are on board.  Hello Spring!  These buds will blossom into something marvelous!
